Michigan is becoming a national leader in biotechnology and life science industries. The state has been ranked second in the United States for overall research and development expenditures. Its life science industries have contributed over $4.8 billion in sales. The University of Michigan ranks 9th in the United States among the top 10 universities in applying biotechnology research to commercialization. With over 500 companies, over 31,000 employees, continued rapid growth in new companies, strong educational resources, and a friendly business climate, the Great Lakes State holds great potential for the future in biotechnology.

Michigan touts several organizations designed to promote life sciences industries.

Among these, MichBio is a non-profit organization which aims to drive Michigan’s life science industry growth. By providing membership to representatives from a broad range of sectors and creating educational and networking opportunities, MichBio seems assured of reaching its long-term goal of fostering the development and growth of Michigan’s life science industries.

The Center for Applied Research & Technology (CART) at Central Michigan University (CMU) in Mount Pleasant represents collaboration between CMU, the Middle Michigan Development Corporation, and the City of Mount Pleasant. The Center offers a 300 acre (1.21 square kilometers or 121.4 hectares) technology park complete with 12,000 square feet (1,114.8 square meters or 0.111 hectares) of facility to foster research relationships; a 17,000 square foot (1,579.3 square meters or 0.158 hectares) expansion provides advanced laboratories and additional space.

The Biotech Research Center (BRC) at Michigan State University promotes multidisciplinary cooperation to bolster biotechnology. The BRC uses its research collaborations, shared equipment and facilities, and education on several levels to provide a valuable tool to Michigan’s biotechnology resources.

The Biosciences Research and Commercialization Center (BRCC) of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo supports new life science ventures by providing funding assistance and expertise.

Michigan hosts numerous biotechnology and life sciences companies within its borders. Among these, MBI International in Lansing, Michigan, is a biotech firm with the goal of providing pilot plant facilities to aid in the development and refinement of products for businesses. Its Bio-Business Incubator of Michigan offers assistance to start-up biotechnology firms. Additional biotech and pharmaceutical companies include Asterand in Detroit, MPI Research in Mattawan, Neogen Corporation in Lansing, Rubicon Genomics in Ann Arbor, and Dow Chemical Company in Midland, among many others.

With so many resources available for innovation and research, Michigan promises tremendous growth potential within the biotechnology industry.
